Different risks call for different benefits.
Group life, accidental death and dismemberment, supplemental life, and short-term disability serve distinct purposes. We explain the differences so you can consider what belongs in your package.
As an independent agency, Spice can help you compare available options and understand the details before deciding.
A CLOSER LOOK
Know what you are comparing.
Group Life and AD&D
Group life can provide a benefit after a covered death. AD&D addresses specified accidental deaths or losses. The coverage triggers and exclusions are not the same. Specified accidental losses may include a limb, sight, hearing, or speech, subject to the policy definitions. Neither group life nor AD&D replaces workers' compensation insurance.
Supplemental Life Insurance
Employees may have the option to choose additional life coverage. Review available amounts, eligibility, underwriting requirements, and what happens if employment changes. Supplemental coverage is generally voluntary and employee-paid, sometimes through payroll deductions. Compare term or whole life options where available, medical underwriting, and any portability or conversion provisions rather than assuming coverage continues after employment.
Short-Term Disability Insurance
Consider benefits that replace part of income during a covered period of illness or injury. Waiting periods, benefit amounts, duration, and exclusions vary. This is different from workers' compensation and Social Security disability. The amount of income replaced and its tax treatment depend on the arrangement; do not assume a fixed percentage or tax-free payment.
Coverage, eligibility, costs, and benefits depend on the policy and carrier. Review the applicable terms and exclusions before choosing.

Questions worth asking.
Is AD&D the same as life insurance?
No. AD&D applies to specified accidental deaths or losses under the policy. Life insurance has its own terms and exclusions. Review both rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Does Short-Term Disability replace all income?
Benefit amounts and limits depend on the policy. Review the covered circumstances, waiting period, payment duration, and exclusions before choosing.
Can employees add more life coverage?
Supplemental life options may be available. Amounts, eligibility, evidence requirements, and portability depend on the plan and carrier.
